This small-batch red wine sangria recipe is perfect for when you have a little hankering for sangria, a little leftover red wine and fruit. And you can make it in a Mason jar – no pitcher necessary!

Small Batch Red Wine Sangria Ingredients

While making a big production out of making sangria, is sort of my thing, it doesn’t have to be a big to-do. Earlier this week, we just happened to have a little leftover Concha Y Toro Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot blend. It wasn’t enough for a full pitcher of sangria. But with the fresh fruit I already had on hand, I whipped up a mini-batch, using the red wine, half a pear, a couple mandarin oranges and a couple of strawberries. It ended up being perfect for just a couple glasses – the perfect midweek sangria treat.

I had my wine. I had my fruit. And I had my Mason jar. I checked to make sure we had a little brandy and club soda. And we were ready to go.

Making Red Wine Sangria in a Mason Jar

Not only did this recipe use ingredients I already had around the house, but it was super easy to make. Since all the ingredients needed to fit in a Mason jar, I only needed a little bit of fruit. I peeled cubed about half of the pear. Then, I hulled, halved and sliced just two large strawberries. And I thinly sliced a couple of fresh mandarin oranges.

Into the Mason jar it all went. I poured in 3/4 cups of the red wine. Then I added a tablespoon of sugar and 2 tablespoons of brandy. I gave the concoction a gentle stir, as I always do. Then into the fridge it went to chill for a couple of hours.

Two hours later, I poured the mixture over ice into two glasses and added a splash of club soda to each glass.

While nothing might quite compare to a luscious pitcher full of delicious sangria, I think I might learn to love the convenience and ease of making a small batch of sangria from time to time. In fact, it just might become my new #WineWednesday thing. Cheers!

The Tao of Wine & Fruit
There’s something about the experience of making sangria that feels artful and contemplative – the delight in shopping for the ingredients, the feeling of Zen as you focus your attention on slicing oranges and cutting strawberries, even the hours it takes for the finished product to reach perfection.
